The Route: Bhopal to Ujjain
Take NH-46 from Bhopal towards Indore. At Dewas (about 150 km), take the exit for Ujjain — it is 38 km from Dewas. The entire route is a well-maintained 4-lane highway. No tolls to worry about for self-drive cars beyond the standard highway toll.
Google Maps navigation works perfectly on this route. Fuel up in Bhopal before departure — petrol and diesel stations are available at Sehore, Dewas, and before Ujjain.
The Bhasma Aarti — Why You Should Plan Around It
The Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar is one of the most extraordinary rituals in India — held at 4 AM every morning, the Shivling is worshipped with ash (bhasma). It is an experience that stays with you. To attend, you need to be in Ujjain by 3:30 AM.
If you are driving for the Bhasma Aarti: depart Bhopal at 12:30–1 AM, drive the 188 km in about 2.5–3 hours (empty highway at night), reach Ujjain by 3:30 AM. After the aarti, rest, explore the city, and return in the afternoon.
Online registration for Bhasma Aarti is required (on the official Mahakal temple website). Slots are limited — book at least 2–3 days in advance.
What to See in Ujjain
- Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga — the primary reason most people visit. One of the 12 Jyotirlingas, and one of 4 Shakti Peethas.
- Ram Ghat — the main ghat on the Shipra river. Beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Sandhya aarti here is peaceful.
- Kal Bhairav Temple — unique temple where the deity is offered alcohol as prasad. An unusual and fascinating experience.
- Mangalnath Temple — ancient temple believed to be the birthplace of Mars (Mangal planet) in Hindu cosmology.
- Vedha Shala (Observatory) — built by Raja Jai Singh II, India's finest ancient astronomical observatory.
